Chargers News: LA Officially Interviews Lions Offensive Coordinator

Could he help cure what ails the Bolts?

Your Los Angeles Chargers are leaving no stone unturned as their permanent head coach and general manager searches continue apace over the weekend.

Per Omar Navarro of Chargers.com, LA has now officially spoken with Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Johnson guided the Jared Goff-led to top-five rankings in cumulative yards, passing yards and rushing yards per contest. Theirs was a prolific unit, notching 30+ point nights across nine regular season contests.

The Lions notched 4,000 passing yards and 2,000 passing yards for the first time ever. Four Detroit players were named to the Pro Bowl.

"I think Ben's a rock star, man," head coach Dan Campbell raved last spring, per Tim Twentyman of Lions.com. "He's a young guy, but he's kind of gone a little longer, harder road to get to where he's at. He's been around some really good coaches, now, some guys who have coached some pretty good quarterbacks."

The 13-5 Lions, one of the elite clubs in the NFC this season, will face off against Baker Mayfield's upstart 10-8 Tampa Bay Buccaneers tomorrow.

Johnson got his NFL start as an offensive assistant for the Miami Dolphins in 2012, and served in a variety of capacities there through 2019.

He kicked off his tenure with the Lions as the club's offensive quality control coach, then moved on to a role as Detroit's tight ends coach, and finally took over as the club's OC ahead of the 2022 season.
