In this story:

A lot of the excitement surrounding the Los Angeles Chargers as they finalize their roster before the 2023 NFL season is due to their offensive pieces. Justin Herbert is rehabbing his shoulder right now but will look to break more records in his fourth professional year.

Along with him, we will get to see Mike Williams and Keenan Allen catching plenty of passes like in years prior and mentor a young Quentin Johnston. But let's not forget about just how important defense will be for LA next season. They have already learned just how tough trying to go touchdown for touchdown with the Kansas City Chiefs is and that their offense can go stagnant at times like in the wild card series.

Therefore, I have my eyes on guys like Eric Kendricks, Sebastian Joseph-Day, and Khalil Mack to make their presence felt since game one of the new season. If LA can put together a solid effort on both sides of the ball, less pressure will be put on Justin Herbert to make crazy plays every match.

LA has long struggled with stopping runs in these past couple of seasons so it will take entire defensive line to work as a group and their secondary players to stay poised. It's going to be great welcoming J.C. Jackson back as well.

SJD detailed exactly the mentality that he wants LA's defense to play with this season.

"The mentality – grit, tough and rugged football," Joseph-Day said. "That's what we're tying to instill here and that's what we will instill here. That's the mindset. That's the culture here that we're building. It's just hard-nosed, getting your nose bloody, down-in and down-out football players, and that's it."

Like I said, LA can be a very scary group.
