The Los Angeles Chargers open their 2023 season this weekend as they welcome in the Miami Dolphins to Sofi Stadium. LA begins this year with a critical matchup that will likely have some playoff implications down the line.

As the year progresses, head coach Brandon Staley comes in on the hot seat. After the Bolts blew a 27-0 lead against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the postseason, many have called for his job, but he was granted more time.

After the season, Staley fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and brought in former Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to run the show. The thought is that Moore will be better served to help get this offensive to the needed level to compete with the elite teams.

Longtime NFL writer Peter King gave his thoughts on the situation when appearing on Pro Football Talk and what he expects from the Bolts this coming season.

“Look, Brandon Staley has nothing against Joe Lombardi, he was the offensive coordinator the last two years, but I just don’t think he felt, ya know, kind of sympatico with Joe Lombardi”

With the addition of Moore, Staley now has even more pressure to succeed. He needs to get this team to the level many believe they can; otherwise, changes could be made this offseason.

King added to his thoughts about the Lombardi-Moore swap.

“I think he feels that he has someone in that seat right now, who is the offensive version of him. An imaginative guy, who all things are wide open”

The Chargers have the tools to compete with the league's top-tier teams. They have a star quarterback in Justin Herbert, good weapons, and a defense with excellent upside. It's make-or-break time for the Bolts in 2023, and it all starts this weekend.
