Chargers News: NFL Columnist Anticipates Stellar 2023 Season From LA's Second-Year Running Back
Your Los Angeles Chargers are going into the season with one of the best running backs in their corner, Austin Ekeler. Ekeler has been the starting running back for the Bolts for a handful of years, and it's been a pleasure watching him evolve and elevate the team and himself to new heights.
Although the 28-year-old has been phenomenal, he hasn't had any help from his backups, which has caused Ekeler to do it all alone in his position. However, that might all need to change to preserve Ekeler for the long haul for a 17-game season.
It's not like LA doesn't have the running backs to do the job; they just haven't produced how they need to. However, NFL columnist for Bleacher Report Kristopher Knox predicts that their second-year running back Isaiah Spiller will be the breakout star for the Bolts this upcoming season.
The Chargers drafted Spiller to be a hard-running complement to starter Austin Ekeler, and he should finally get that opportunity in Year 2. Spiller will still have to compete with Joshua Kelley for playing time, but L.A. should have a newfound focus on the ground game under offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.
Ekeler will still be the top back in Los Angeles, but if Spiller can overtake Kelley as the No. 2 back, he'll be in store for a productive second season.

The 21-year-old was coming off a great collegiate season at Texas A&M and couldn't carry that momentum into his rookie season.
Spiller had a rookie season to forget, as he only racked up 41 yards in 18 attempts throughout six games. The opportunities weren't there for Spiller, but with the addition of new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, he could see some increase in his attempts.
The spot for the RB2 will be an interesting battle to look at, but if Spiller can overtake it, he can set himself up to be RB1 if things don't work out with Ekeler after this season.
It can't get any worse for Spiller barring injuries. Knock on wood.
