Chargers News: NFL Columnist Has This Free Agent Safety As Top Priority for LA

Will they make the move?
In this story:

The clock is ticking for the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason and not in the worst way possible. We are a couple of weeks away from watching our Bolts kick off yet another training camp and truly seeing how the roster is going to unfold. I will say that LA's front office did an incredible job these past few months at making sure that many of the holes in their squad were filled.

But it's going to take a lot more to solidify their actual place in the NFL after the way their 2022 season ended. And with some key names returning from injury and big changes within the coaching staff, LA will be fully bought in heading into their next campaign. Justin Herbert, the unspoken leader of the Bolts, has even been willing to put off his own contract talks to ensure that LA is focused on their bigger goals at mind.

However, one of the biggest needs for the Bolts remains another consistent and experienced safety. At this point in the offseason, the Chargers will likely just have to make the best of what the market is offering and welcome a new name in before training camp to see how they fit. Writer Dan Fappiano brought up a familiar face that they should sign: John Johnson III.

"Johnson has been with the Browns the past two seasons after beginning his career with the Los Angeles Rams. This past season, Johnson started all 17 games for Cleveland, racking up 101 tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception. Over his entire NFL career, Johnson has made 512 tackles, 41 passes defended and 12 interceptions. He has 100+ tackles in three of his six seasons. Coming off of a 100+ tackle campaign, Johnson understands what it takes to succeed. In Los Angeles, Johnson could earn an immediate role and help bolster the team's secondary."
