For the Los Angeles Chargers to reach their lofty goals this season, their defense will need to do its part. The offense will once again be one of the best in the NFL, but the struggles on the defensive side of the ball have hurt this team.

The Bolts have some real talent on defense, so their struggles are hard to understand. Especially with head coach Brandon Staley leading the charge, the Chargers defense was supposed to be the next great thing.

One of the main players for Los Angeles this season is defensive end Joey Bosa. Bosa was limited last season due to injuries, but he is back and ready to go.

He added some weight this offseason, and one insider believes it will help Bosa as the year progresses. During an appearance on the Guilty as Charged Podcast, Shawn Syed gave thoughts on Bosa for the year.

“My hope with Joey Bosa is that he is able to return to a top level as a pass rusher and I’m hoping we see it more often this year where Bosa is just dumping people and able to get into the backfield.”

However, on Sunday, he was a non-factor in the team's opening season loss to the Miami Dolphins. He recorded one tackle in the game and didn't do much else. For the Chargers to get where they want to go, Bosa is going to need to regain his form as one of the better defensive players in the entire league.

“He has so much lower body strength, so I think that all of it combined, it’s just hopefully better."

Two years ago, Bosa dominated offenses to the tune of 51 combined tackles and 10.5 sacks. The former Ohio State Buckeye has insane speed off the line of scrimmage and can use his strength to overpower linemen.

He needs to get back to his dominant self for the Chargers to have any hope for success this season. Bosa will have another chance to prove his worth this year as the Bolts head to Tennessee this weekend for a matchup with the Titans.
