Chargers News: Stats Prove How Mediocre Brandon Staley Has Been
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley has been a major talking point around football circles for some time now. Many have called for his job as the Chargers continue to underperform from their high expectations, but so far, the team hasn't budged.
Staley entered the season on the hot seat, but it has only gotten warmed as the weeks have gone on. Now with the Chargers sitting at 4-7 on the season, things could get ugly quickly.
The Chargers have been the definition of average since taking over the job, and the numbers back it up. In their 61 games since they drafted Justin Herbert in 2020, the team has a record of 30-31, following this most recent 20-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens last night. They have also allowed nine more points (1,527) than they have scored (1,518) during that period.
While not all of this has been Staley's doing, he has been the coach for a few seasons now. He has not been able to elevate this team, despite having a franchise quarterback in Herbert. Across his two-and-a-half seasons with Los Angeles, Staley has "guided" the team to a thoroughly mediocre 23-22 record, pretty overwhelming considering some of the club's offensive talent.
Staley was originally brought in due to his strong defensive mindset, but to this date, the Bolts defense under their newish head coach hasn't been very good. They are consistently falling behind in different categories, and he hasn't found a way to maximize anything.
It's almost a forgone conclusion that if the Chargers continue to struggle this season, and can't turn things around, Staley is good as gone. The Bolts can't afford to continue to waste seasons while Herbert is in his prime, and Staley may be holding them back.
