While it may not have ended in the manner that he would have hoped for, Los Angeles Chargers interim head coach Giff Smith got his opportunity. After taking over for the fired Brandon Staley, Smith did what he could to help keep the Bolts together over the final few weeks.

The Chargers couldn't pick up a win for the coach during their season finale, despite their best efforts. But Smith knows that he likely won't be the leading man next season for this team.

“I think that anybody that has been in the profession thinks of it, but I’ll be honest, these three weeks, all I wanted to do was give my all to these players for these three games,” Smith said when asked if he’d like to be considered for the job. “Whatever happens, we’ll move forward. I haven’t really thought about it.”

Over the final three games with Smith at the helm, the Bolts did look better. Unfortunately, they didn't have the talent to get over the hump, but they railed together as a unit.

Losing a head coach during a season can be tough on a team, but Smith put his best foot forward. The players all seemed to respect him as well, which can be hard to have happen.

“We didn’t get the wins like we wanted to, but as far as what we were trying to accomplish, coming off a difficult loss in Las Vegas, the character of these guys, I really think they rallied together and really fought for three games,” Smith said when asked to evaluate the final three games. “I really do.”

The Bolts now head into an offseason full of questions around the team. They have to find a way to get back to being competitive, and not allow another wasted season to take place.
