Chargers Rumors: Could Jim Harbaugh Wind Up Back With Wolverines?
University of Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh, the reigning College Football Playoff national champion, has been long considered the head coaching candidate of choice for your Los Angeles Chargers, although that hasn't prevented Bolts ownership from chatting with a variety of other contenders.
The Atlanta Falcons are also clearly interested in Harbaugh's services, although after a second interview with ex-New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick recently, it appears they're about to take themselves out of the running.
As Mike Florio of NBC Sports notes, suddenly the competition for Harbaugh could come down to Los Angeles and a Michigan return.
"The Chargers and Falcons have emerged as the two NFL teams most interested in Harbaugh," Florio observes. "If, as it appears, Harbaugh is a Plan B to Bill Belichick (or, perhaps, the internal candidate preferred by folks who are more likely to be fired or neutered by Belichick) in Atlanta, it looks like the Chargers or no one for Harbaugh. And if the Chargers are playing it on the cheap side with Harbaugh, he might end up getting the most money to stay at Michigan."
It could also be possible Harbaugh is using all this chatter as negotiating leverage, and will be happy to stay in Ann Arbor for an elevated salary. With Nick Saban now retiring, Harbaugh could become a recruiting institution before too long if he does stay in the college ranks.
