Chargers News: Experts Think Brandon Staley Will Be First To Go If Losses Continue
Your 0-2 Los Angeles Chargers have had an unexpectedly uneven start to their 2023 season, following a shocking 27-24 overtime loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at Nissan Stadium.
In the latest edition of The Bill Simmons Podcast, Simmons and guest "Cousin" Sal Iacono sifted through the wreckage of the Bolts' disappointing early run. Both agreed that one man would be found more liable than any other, and could be out the door as soon as this season if the losing continues.
"If Brandon Staley got fired tomorrow, would you drive off the road in complete disbelief? 'Cause I would not," Simmons posited.
"I think we nailed this team years ago, honestly," Iacono responded. "Every Chargers game is nuts. Put Gus Johnson on every telecast, or have Brandon Staley coach every other game to make those games exciting. Don't take them laying points. Don't take them ever, who cares? They're going to make every quarterback look good. [Ryan] Tannehill, a guy who was about to get shoved to the practice squad or worse, was 20-for-24 with 246 [yards], but they'll probably wind up... 9-7 going into that last weekend, so I feel like you could sum the Chargers up better than any other team."
"They gave up two bombs to Tannehill, which is embarrassing," Simmons noted. "Tannehill in the first half... it just looked like his career was headed to being over, they fall back to 11-0... and you think, 'Oh, it's done, Tannehill can't take anybody back from three points, much less 11.' And then they got some rhythm, and they started running on [the Chargers], they started running on Herbert."
"The Chargers have now had two of these," Simmons continued. "They're 0-2 in 'either/or' games [i.e. games that could have gone either way], and that's kind of who they've been for the entire Brandon Staley/Herbert era. And at some point, guess who they're not going to blame? Justin Herbert. [There's] going to be a new coach... Herbert is one of the five most talented quarterbacks in the league, but at some point you've got to be better than .500."
"Herbert probably wants to keep him around honestly. Less of the blame will get passed his way. And again he's always going to have decent stats. What'd he have, 305 yards and two touchdowns?" Iacono asked. He was exactly on the nose. "I didn't even see any bad calls for Staley, but I just don't think a lot of the players understand his defense. I think I could be right, because that secondary hasn't been right for a couple, three years."
"Yeah and they spent money on it too," Simmons concluded. "J.C. Jackson, who got hurt last year, this year has looked bad, and they've been beaten over and over again over the top."
