Former Chargers Star Says RB is Worst Position to Play in the NFL
Fans of the Los Angeles Chargers need no introduction to how 2023 free agency has treated some of the top running backs available. Austin Ekeler made it clear from the jump that he was not going to return to the squad without at least testing the trade market due to LA not wanting to give him the sizable extension he believed he had earned.
Ekeler's big argument was that he was coming off of the two best seasons of his career and that he was only getting older. With a number of quarterbacks all around the league getting massive contracts, the 27-year-old star decided he would be the guy to represent his position and take a stand. However, he didn't get too far and ended up returning to the Chargers with $2 million of new incentives in his deal.
But now that the main wave of free agency is over, it's looking like more running backs are starting to grow unhappy with the respect that their position is lacking and that latest person to speak up has actually been a former Bolts star in Melvin Gordon. Gordon suited up for the organization from 2015 to 2019 and he did not have the prettiest exit when he left to join the Denver Broncos.
He held out during his final contract year with the team due to not getting the length of a deal he was looking for and took multiple shots at the fanbase. Fast forward to today and he's currently a free agent just weeks away from training camp starting. But Gordon came out recently and slammed the NFL world's lack of respect for RB's... even going as far to call it the worst position to play.
"It's just so tough for running backs right now, man," said Gordon. "You have a lot of running backs that's out there and we just don't get no love. It's literally the worst position to play in the NFL right now. It literally sucks."
