KC Chiefs Divisional Round Injury Updates on Joe Thuney, Mike Edwards, Willie Gay Jr.
Update: A Monday report provides some fresh context to Thuney's pec injury.
Report Sheds Light on Joe Thuney Pec Injury
The original story, published on Sunday night, continues below.
The Kansas City Chiefs' win over the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round booked a trip to the AFC Championship Game, but not before multiple players went down with injuries.
In the first half of play alone, safety Mike Edwards and linebacker Willie Gay Jr. suffered ailments that forced them out of the game. Cornerback Trent McDuffie was briefly banged up, although the second-year man returned not too long thereafter. As far as minor bumps and bruises are concerned, Kansas City came out in decent shape. With that said, head coach Andy Reid revealed a third notable injury following the game.
According to Reid, left guard Joe Thuney is dealing with a pectoral injury. He wouldn't go into specifics, but this is certainly something to monitor in the next few days as the Chiefs get back to Kansas City and eventually start their week of practice. Thuney, who played a critical role in slowing down Bills pass-rusher Ed Oliver, appeared to suffer his injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game. He was initially ruled questionable to return by the team; Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Thuney will undergo an MRI on Monday.
Elsewhere, it's confirmed that Edwards is nursing a concussion. The veteran safety was quickly downgraded to out during the game, with the CBS broadcast confirming that he entered concussion protocol. No two injuries of that nature are exactly the same but with seven days between games, there's a chance that Edwards can get out of protocol if he progresses quickly. For example, this season alone, running back Isiah Pacheco cleared protocol with relative ease but rookie left tackle Wanya Morris is taking much longer.
Gay was added to the injury report on Saturday with a neck injury. That same designation knocked him out of the Divisional Round contest in Orchard Park, although it doesn't appear to be anything serious on the surface. Gay tweeted, "Ima be great on game day" on his X (formerly Twitter) account when asked about his status following the game.
