Chris Jones's Offseason Motivation: I Had Joe Burrow on the Dummies I Was Slapping
In the latest episode of New Heights with Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones joined the show to discuss a wide array of subjects ranging from being "a little drunk" (and a little underwhelmed) when he was drafted by the Chiefs to his celebratory postgame Taylor Swift soundtrack. But one on-the-field moment from the 2021 season fueled Jones all the way through the following offseason and through 2022, culminating in KC's second Super Bowl victory in four years.
Travis asked Jones to compare the Chiefs' first Super Bowl of the modern era (Super Bowl LIV over the San Francisco 49ers) to their Super Bowl LVII win over Jason's Philadelphia Eagles. Jones said the latter meant more, but because of the team (and quarterback) they beat in the AFC Championship Game.
"I think this last one for me personally," Jones said. "Because the year before that, we played the Cincinnati Bengals and I f—ing missed Joe Burrow twice and the motherf—er posted a picture talking about, 'Cartier glasses I can't even look at you,' and the picture was f—ing of me diving looking like a goofball Jamal diving for his ankles. I'm like, 'Okay.'"
Then, Travis mentioned Jones's shot at revenge in the fourth quarter of last season's AFC Championship Game when Jones sacked Burrow.
"I needed it," Jones said with a smile. "I needed it, bro. I wanted nothing more than just that moment again. I wanted nothing more. And it happened, bro. It happened like full circle, honestly. 'Cause I'm like f— it, my whole offseason, I'm training thinking about Joe Burrow. I had them f—ing paint pictures of Joe Burrow on the f—ing dummies I was slapping, I swear to god."
Travis mentioned how the team puts photos of opposing offensive linemen on trash cans in the week leading up to a game as the trio continued to laugh.
"I had Joe Burrow on the dummies, bro," Jones continued. "I'm telling you, when he posted that picture, I'm like, 'Oh, all balls are off. I can't wait to see him again."
