Super Bowl LVII Betting Odds: Back Mahomes or Hurts for MVP

The value isn't anything crazy, but neither quarterback is a bad bet for the MVP of Sunday's big game.

It's officially Super Bowl LVII week, as the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are just days away from squaring off in the final game of the 2022-23 NFL season. Following the two best regular-season stretches in the league, Andy Reid and Nick Sirianni's squads are set to cap things off with a game that figures to be an exciting battle between two electric quarterbacks and playmaking defenses.

As of the publishing of this article, our friends at the SI Sportsbook have the Eagles favored by 1.5 points on Sunday with the over/under for total combined points scored sitting at 50.5. The slight advantages don't stop there, though, as quarterback Jalen Hurts is the odds-on favorite to win Super Bowl LVII MVP at +100. Patrick Mahomes, who already has one of those awards sitting on his mantle, checks in at +120. Below are odds from a few major sportsbooks:

There are some other options for Super Bowl MVP (Travis Kelce and A.J. Brown are at +1000, DeVonta Smith at +2000 and Haason Reddick at +2500), but Hurts and Mahomes are viewed as far and away the most likely candidates to win the award. Neither signal-caller will enter Sunday's game at 100%, as Hurts still has a lingering shoulder injury that is bothering him and Mahomes continues to rehab from a high-ankle sprain suffered in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Despite that, betting on a quarterback to bring home the MVP trophy for Super Bowl LVII is still probably the way to go.

In the previous 56 Super Bowls held, over half of the MVP winners — 31, to be exact — have been quarterbacks. When narrowing the parameters down to the past 10 Super Bowls, that majority line is met again (six MVP winners were quarterbacks). Considering that Mahomes is coming off a 326-yard masterpiece in the AFC Championship Game, has had time to rest since then and has Super Bowl experience, backing him isn't a bad idea. While Hurts is coming off some subpar playoff outings and is making his Super Bowl debut, he has big-game experience at the college level and is also a threat to make a game-changing play at any moment.

The value isn't as good with Hurts, but the logic is there. He's an engineer of one of the NFL's most potent offensive attacks and pending a statistically dominant performance from one of his main skill weapons, he very well could win the Super Bowl MVP award with a big game and a win. The same thing can be said for Mahomes, and likely with more confidence given his track record and his recent success despite the injury. The two star quarterbacks are sitting atop this year's list for a reason, and the bar is set high for their upcoming showdown in Glendale.
