Tyreek Hill on Facing Chiefs: Mad to Not Return to Arrowhead, but 'It's Going to be Problems' for KC
It's rare for a trade to truly be win-win in the NFL, but if anyone can claim that cause, it's the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins.
In March 2022, the two teams agreed to a blockbuster trade that sent wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins in exchange for five draft picks: a first-, second-, and fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and a fourth- and sixth-rounder in 2023. Hill has been electric in the high-flying Dolphins offense, and the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII less than a year after the trade.
On Sunday at 8:30 a.m. CT in Frankfurt, Germany, Hill will do something he's never done before. He'll play against the Chiefs.
Hill took questions about the Chiefs during his postgame press conference after Miami's win over the New England Patriots on Sunday, wasting no time as the NFL world looks forward to Hill's first matchup against his old team. Asked if he had been to Germany before, Hill had the Chiefs (and former quarterback Patrick Mahomes) on his mind.
"I have never been to Germany," Hill said. "I’m looking forward to it. Obviously, we’re playing against the Chiefs, so it’s going to be a fun game to see some old faces, and yeah, just get after it, talk trash to my old quarterback."
Hill was then asked to compare his first two years in Miami with the start of his time in Kansas City, leading him to discuss what he learned from Chiefs teammates and how that lets him lead the Dolphins' locker room now.
"I just know a whole lot more now," Hill said. "Obviously when you come into the league you’re trying to find where you fit and understand how the game is played, but now I’ve been able to learn from other veterans in the past locker room that I was in and apply it here. I know a whole lot more now, whether it’s doing stuff off the field or just being in the locker room with the guys, trying to be a leader in that aspect. I am light years ahead of where I was back then, and you know what, everything happens for a reason, so here I am today."
Later asked about his emotional expectations for the week, Hill discussed his mindset for Kansas City.
"I’m ready, man," Hill said. "It’s just another game. I’m just excited to play against my old brothers. It’s just like if you’re in high school and you move to a different city, it’s still ball. At the end of the day, my job is to go out there and do what I’ve been doing all year, and that’s have fun, help lead this team, and create opportunities for whoever. I’m still going to be the same old Cheetah, baby."
Even though this matchup is a high-profile international game for the NFL, Hill acknowledged that he would have preferred to return to Arrowhead Stadium to face off with his old team as an enemy on a familiar field.
"I was kind of pissed about it, man, because obviously, I’ve got so many friends, I’ve got family there, one of my sons is there," Hill said when asked about the game going to Germany instead of KC. "Just the energy, man, feeling that energy in Arrowhead would have been next level, but obviously I understand that the NFL, they want to be more global and they want to send two of the best offenses over there, two MVP quarterbacks, dynamic offenses, and it’s going to be a good game. It’s really good promotion for them. But going back to Arrowhead, it would have been sensational."
Hill also sported a new haircut in his postgame press conference, which a reporter called "the Kansas City look" before asking why Hill chose to make a change this week.
"I just had to let KC know, whenever they see me, it’s going to be problems, because old 'Reek,' yeah, he was hell, so I’m back," Hill said. "The Cheetah is back."
