No Contract, No Problem: Chris Jones Lands in Top 10 of NFL Top 100 Players
Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones has not yet reported to Chiefs training camp to prepare for the 2023 NFL season, but he received one more honor on Monday night based on his dominant 2022 campaign.
In the 2023 edition of The Top 100 Players, a poll voted on by active NFL players, Jones landed at No. 10, the best ranking of his career and his first appearance in the Top 10.
Jones was voted as a first-team AP All-Pro and was third in Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2022 as he led the Chiefs' defense from the interior to the tune of 15.5 sacks, 44 tackles and 29 quarterback hits in the regular season. However, the Chiefs' second Super Bowl-winning run may have solidified Jones's legacy even more than his dominant regular season.
Before the 2022-23 playoffs, Jones played in 12 playoff games without recording a sack. Then, in the AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Jones brought down Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow twice and later made his impact felt against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.
As noted by Mina Kimes of ESPN, Jones played the most snaps of any defensive tackle last season. As Seth Walder of ESPN illustrated in the chart below, Jones was the most-frequently double-teamed qualifying defensive tackle in football while simultaneously being the most successful by pass rush win rate.
After the NFL Top 100 dust settles, Jones and the Chiefs will have to return to negotiations if both sides want to see No. 95 stay in Kansas City for years to come. In the meantime, the Chiefs' d-line keeps getting thinner.
