The Kansas City Chiefs' wide receivers have been a major storyline for the struggling KC offense all season, and now they're down two of their most dynamic playmakers from an already-thin group.

The Chiefs placed wide receiver Mecole Hardman on injured reserve with a thumb sprain and ruled wide receiver Kadarius Toney out for Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders, despite the fact that he was a full participant in practice all week.

Kadarius Toney's surprise injury update

As reported by Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest, Toney had been on the Chiefs' injury report with an ankle issue, but a hip issue is what was added to the Saturday injury report. Derrick later reported that Toney "developed some discomfort in his hip during practice Friday" and continued to bother him on Saturday morning.

Mecole Hardman's injury severity

Hardman landing on IR is a bit of a surprise, considering that he returned to the game after leaving against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. He never returned punts after his injury, leaving that work to the now-out Toney.

On Friday, head coach Andy Reid was asked if Hardman's injury could keep him out more than just one week.

"There’s a chance." Reid said. "We’re just getting it double-checked here. There’s a chance."

Hardman will now be out a minimum of four games.

Kansas City's corresponding roster moves

Wide receiver Richie James was activated off injured reserve last week but was a healthy scratch on gameday. The Chiefs will likely have him return to the field in Vegas, but they also made two practice squad elevations on Saturday.

The Chiefs elevated running back La'Mical Perine and wide receiver Montrell Washington, in light of the loss of running back Jerick McKinnon and both receiver injuries.

Washington proved to be a sure-handed punt returner during his original stint on the Chiefs' active roster, returning eight punts for 61 yards and one kickoff for 20 yards. He did not take an offensive snap.

Perine was active in place of running back Clyde-Edwards Helaire during the Chiefs' game against the Miami Dolphins in Germany when he took one carry for one yard.
