Report: Chiefs RBs Coach Greg Lewis to Meet With Commanders

Eric Bieniemy is reportedly interested in adding a familiar face to his new staff in Washington.

The Kansas City Chiefs' offensive coaching ranks have already witnessed one major development early in the 2023 offseason, and another could potentially be on the horizon soon.

Just days after Eric Bieniemy joined the Washington Commanders to be their new assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, a new report indicates that he's interested in bringing a friend along with him. Per Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, Chiefs running backs coach Greg Lewis is traveling to D.C. to meet with the Commanders on Wednesday about a potential role on Bieniemy's still-developing staff:

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network confirms the Commanders' interest, adding that the team wants to possibly hire him "to a top spot" on Bieniemy's staff. According to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post, Stanford assistant Tavita Pritchard is also meeting with the Commanders on Wednesday to discuss a potential coaching role on the offensive staff.

Lewis, who was an eight-year NFL veteran as a wideout for the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings, spent three years coaching in college before joining the New Orleans Saints as an offensive assistant for the 2015 campaign. He then returned to Philadelphia to coach for the following season, later becoming a member of Andy Reid's coaching staff in Kansas City ahead of the 2017 season. Lewis was the Chiefs' wide receivers coach from 2017-2020, transitioning to running backs coach for the 2021 season and staying in that role for his most recent year with the team.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN noted on Wednesday morning that Lewis was a name to watch for the Commanders due to his history with Bieniemy, which certainly can play to his benefit here. Pelissero pointed out Lewis's coaching versatility and respect in Kansas City as pluses as well, making him a popular candidate as the month of February continues to unfold. The Chiefs already have to fill their now-vacant offensive coordinator position and if Lewis departs for Washington after a successful interview process, another spot on Reid's staff could be opening up in the very near future.
