30 Days of Colts' Fits: Marvin Mims, WR, Oklahoma

A new series for the site that will take us right up to draft night. 30 Days and 30 Players the Colts are/could be interested in. Next up is Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims.

The 2023 NFL Draft is officially just under a month away. In order to help you all along until draft day, I decided to start a daily prospect spotlight series to talk about some players that the Colts could target next month.

The players mentioned in this series will be players that I have either heard that the team is really high on or are players that just make way too much sense for the team based on fit/past draft history.

Next up on the countdown to Draftmas is Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims.

Background

Marvin Mims is a former four star recruit that holds multiple high school records in the state of Texas. The highly touted receiver made an impact on day one with the Oklahoma Sooners.

Mims would make the Freshman All-America team in his first year of collegiate play, as he totaled 37 receptions for 610 yards and nine touchdowns as a true freshman back in 2020. He also earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors for his strong debut season of play.

Mims followed that year up with another promising season in 2021, hauling in 32 receptions for 705 yards and five touchdowns. His 22.0 yards per reception ranked fourth across all of college football. He earned Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors for his play on the year.

In his third and final season in college, Mims put together his best year yet. He caught 54 passes for 1,083 yards and six touchdowns on the year. He earned First Team All-Big 12 honors for his first career 1,000 yard season.

For his career, Mims averaged 19.2 yards per reception and led Oklahoma in receiving yards in each of his three seasons. He also leaves Oklahoma with 18 receptions of over 40 yards in his career.

Ability on Film

Marvin Mims is one of the more explosive vertical threats in this entire draft class. He offers inside/out versatility and can take a top off of a defense with his ability to get (and win) vertical.

Despite being a tad smaller than the typical Chris Ballard receiver, Mims does excel in contested catch opportunities quite a bit. He hauled in over 50% of his contested vertical targets a year ago, continually making circus catches over defenders with ease.

Despite being a player that can win contested catches, Mims also has the speed and explosion to beat defenders deep. He has phenomenal ball tracking skills and he is at his most comfortable when he is used in the deep passing game:

If Shane Steichen is looking for a better version of Quez Watkins in Indy, Marvin Mims can be that guy for his offense:

Fit with the Colts/Team Interest

The Indianapolis Colts are moving to a vertical passing offense with the hiring of Shane Steichen. While the team did go out and add a speedster in Isaiah McKenzie, they could use another young pass catcher to threaten the defense at all levels.

Marvin Mims is a player that excels in the vertical passing game. He can play in the slot or on the outside, and he can win with his elite combination of speed and explosion. He is the exact missing link that the Colts need to put together what Shane Steichen wants on offense.

While the Colts haven't been connected to Mims yet in this draft cycle, his fit is just too perfect for me to ignore with this series. Indy would be wise to spend a day two pick on this talented receiver later this month.
