Colts' Shane Steichen Updates Status of QB Anthony Richardson
Indianapolis Colts fans received their first taste of Minshew Mania in Week 2. They could receive an even bigger dose during Week 3.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters on September 20 that starting quarterback Anthony Richardson is in the concussion protocol. Because of that, he won't practice on Wednesday.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport implied in a tweet that Richardson's concussion leaves the door open for backup quarterback Gardner Minshew making his first start for Indianapolis on Sunday.
The Colts seem to be in good hands if Minshew has to start. He went 19-for-23 with 171 yards and a touchdown in relief of Richardson against the Houston Texans during Week 2. It was the first time Minshew posted a completion percentage 80% of better since Week 13 of the 2021 season.
Minshew entered Sunday's game during the second quarter. Richardson told the team he was suffering from concussion-like symptoms, which caused the rookie signal caller to leave the game.
USA Today's Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz wrote that the Colts believe Richardson suffered his concussion when he banged his head against the ground following his second rushing touchdown of the day.
Richardson played two drives after his second rushing touchdown. He didn't return to the game after exiting.
In roughly five quarters this season, Richardson has posted a 63.8% completion percentage, 279 passing yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He's also rushed for 75 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Minshew has started 24 games during his five-year NFL career. He went 6-6 as a rookie with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019. Since then, though, he is 2-10 as a starter.
However, seven of those 10 losses came in 2020 with the Jaguars, who went 1-15 that season.
Minshew spent the past two years with the Philadelphia Eagles. He went 0-2 as a starter for an injured Jalen Hurts last season.
In 34 NFL appearances, Minshew has posted a 63.2% completion percentage and 7.1 yards per pass. He also has 45 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
