Anthony Richardson Out of Concussion Protocol, to Start vs. Rams
Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen announced on Friday that rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson has cleared the concussion protocol and will start this Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.
Richardson suffered a concussion two weeks ago in the first quarter of the Colts' win over the Houston Texans and missed the following overtime victory last Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. Richardson was replaced in the lineup by Gardner Minshew.
So far this season, Richardson is 30-of-47 passing (63.8%) for 279 yards (5.9 YPA), 1 touchdown, and 1 interception for a rating of 78.2. He has also carried the ball 13 times for 75 yards (5.8 avg.), and 3 scores. Richardson is tied with the Philadelphia Eagles' Jalen Hurts for the most rushing touchdowns by quarterbacks, and the pair are tied for the fourth-most overall.
Richardson will return against a Rams defense that ranks 8th overall (284.7 YPG), including 7th against the pass (181.0 YPG) and 13th against the run (103.7 YPG). They are also 13th in points allowed (20.7 PPG).
Steichen also mentioned that center Ryan Kelly remains in the concussion protocol while left tackle Berhard Raimann developed symptoms this week and is now in the protocol as well. Right tackle Braden Smith also missed practice on Friday with a wrist injury. Defensive tackles DeForest Buckner (groin/back) and Grover Stewart (foot) are also up in the air for Sunday.
