Colts Draft Another Athletic, Pass-Catching Tight End in Will Mallory
The Indianapolis Colts have selected Miami tight end Will Mallory in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, with the 162nd overall pick.
Mallory (6'4", 239, 23 years old) comes from a family with a rich football tradition, including his grandfather Bill Mallory who was the head coach at Indiana University, and uncle Curt Mallory, who is currently the head coach at Indiana State.
Will Mallory was productive for the Hurricanes, increasing his production in all five years, totaling 115 receptions for 1,544 yards (13.4 avg.), and 14 touchdowns. He's yet another athletic player with a RAS over 9.0 that the Colts have drafted.
A potential issue ahead for Mallory and the Colts roster is that he's known as a receiving tight end, which the Colts already have plenty of. Currently, the Colts' tight end group features starters Mo Alie-Cox and Kylen Granson, up-and-comer Jelani Woods, the promising Andrew Ogletree, along with Jalen Wydermyer, Pharaoh Brown, and Nikola Kalinic.
According to the Indy Draft Guide, here is how Mallory fits with the Colts:
The Colts have plenty of pass-catching tight ends, making Will Mallory not the best fit for this team. Indy is very high on Jelani Woods, Kylen Granson, and Drew Ogletree. All three are at their best when they run routes and catch the ball, like Mallory. If the Colts are to add a tight end on Day 3, they will need to have solid blocking skills to have a chance.
