Report: Colts' Isaiah Rodgers Sr. Suspension Coming Soon
The Indianapolis Colts have recently been dealing with the looming investigation for their cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. and his breach of the league’s gambling policy.
After reportedly placing hundreds of bets that included some of the 2022 regular season games he physically played in for the Colts, many assumed he would be suspended for beyond a full season; or, for the harsher punishment, indefinitely from the NFL.
However, NFL Insider Adam Schefter released that Rodgers is expected to be served a suspension for the 2023 season only.
For the past few seasons, there have been multiple suspensions handed out ever since now-Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley was caught betting on his then-NFL squad Atlanta Falcons’ games in 2021. Ridley was removed for the entire 2022 season for this action, which also likely led to the Jaguars picking him up and the Falcons not keeping him.
However, Rodgers placed far more wagers overall and on more games that he was directly involved in. Rodgers should consider this a big break with how many other suspensions for gambling have already been dealt out over the past couple of years, mixed with the volume of his bets and how he used someone else’s profile to place them.
The biggest question now is: “Will the Colts bring him back?” The thinking tends to lean toward no. But, Rodgers did get ahead of everything, admitting that he was responsible via Twitter.
Could this heartfelt admittance be enough for owner Jim Irsay and general manager Chris Ballard to allow Rodgers back on the roster (through free agency) in 2024? It will be something to keep an eye out for.
If the Colts don’t accept him back, who will take a chance on the high potential of Rodgers? As with Ridley before, there will be much anticipation for the news story to break for which NFL team is signing him.
