Colts Could Have More Options in NFL Draft than Expected
It's long been assumed that the Indianapolis Colts would take a quarterback with their No. 4 overall pick in the NFL Draft on April 27th.
The only real question leading up to the draft has been would they trade up to get a choice of the big-four quarterbacks instead of gambling on taking who is left at No. 4.
The other big assumption has been that the Houston Texans would take a quarterback with the No. 2 pick, but that might not be the case after all.
Peter King of NBC Sports writes of the Texans:
I think the Texans are going to go quarterback at two. But in the last few days, I’ve heard this about Houston GM Nick Caserio: Very conservative. If he doesn’t love a quarterback at two, he’s not going to force it. He’d rather take this year’s sure edge thing, Will Anderson, the way Detroit took Aidan Hutchinson with the second pick last year. Detroit got rewarded handsomely with a great rookie year from Hutchinson. -- Peter King, NBC Sports
New Texans head coach Demeco Ryans was an All-SEC linebacker at Alabama, and Anderson played at... Alabama.
The Carolina Panthers are going to take a quarterback with the No. 1 pick. The Panthers didn't send a haul to the Bears to pass on a quarterback; that only happens in the movies.
If the Texans don't take a quarterback at No. 2, and the Cardinals don't trade out of the No. 3 spot, the Colts could be sitting pretty at No. 4 with the second pick of the top-four quarterbacks in the draft.
Indianapolis has been linked heavily with Will Levis in recent weeks including a mock draft from Mel Kiper Jr, but that's in large part because of the very real possibility that quarterbacks go one, two, and three in the draft.
It may just be pre-draft posturing, but the Colts could end up having their choice of three quarterbacks instead of taking who is leftover at No. 4.
It's a remote chance, but it's not out of the question.
