Colts Sign Former Packers, Texans Receiver

The Indianapolis Colts are bringing in a veteran wide receiver with aspirations for a bigger role.

The Indianapolis Colts have been busy over the last few weeks with multiple signings and cuts. Today, the team signed former Green Bay Packers and Houston Texans wide receiver Amari Rodgers.

"We have signed free agent WR Amari Rodgers and waived WR Johnny King," the Colts announced on Twitter.

Rodgers was a third-round draft pick in 2021. He would begin his career with the Packers, but not last more than one season.

In 2022 he would see himself sent to the Texans after the Packers released him. Through two years as a professional, Rodgers has 32 games played (two starts), 20 catches for 249 yards, and one touchdown. He’s also been used in the ground game with three carries for 18 total yards and a first down.

Even though he doesn’t have receiving stats that will come off of a page, he made more impact in the punt/kick return game. In his career, he has 40 punt returns for 305 yards and 17 kick returns for 321 yards and no scores from either. This may be his best chance to make the roster, especially given how much the Colts adore their special teamers and that the other proven kick returners are Isaiah McKenzie and cornerback Dallis Flowers.

Standing at 5’9” and 212 pounds, he continues the trend of Indianapolis taking the smaller slot receivers, as they have with McKenzie (5’9”) and Josh Downs (5’9”).

Will Rodgers make the most of his opportunity in his new setting? Given that this will be his third NFL team in as many years, he’s going to push as hard as possible to make an impact on a team with a new beginning.
