The Indianapolis Colts have elevated veteran wide receiver D.J. Montgomery to the active roster from the practice squad for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport posted on X: “The #Colts are signing WR DJ Montgomery from the practice squad to their active roster, per agents @davidcanter and @NessMugrabi.”

The Colts later officially announced the roster move. Altogether, Montgomery's promotion came alongside the announcement of defensive tackle Grover Stewart being activated from the Commissioner's Exempt list as well as wide receiver Juwann Winfree being waived.

Along with Montgomery, the Colts also called up running back Tyler Goodson to the active roster from the practice squad following the news of Jonathan Taylor’s thumb surgery. Montgomery’s addition makes sense for the Colts' wide receiver depth considering where the team is at this point of the season.

After putting together their fourth straight win to get to 7-5 and the current sixth playoff spot in the AFC, the Colts offense will look to get any type of help or looks for the final regular season push.

Through his short career in the league that began in 2021 with the New York Jets, Montgomery has been minimal in production, catching 3 passes on 6 targets for 36 yards and 2 first downs. However, he’s also barely seen the field to showcase his potential.

Even though the Colts' receiving corps is led without question by Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, and Alec Pierce, it’s still important to keep speed and experience available on the depth chart. Montgomery can also continue to give the Colts’ defense good looks in practice to prepare for the most important contests of the year that are remaining.

Montgomery adds a veteran presence to an overlooked receiving room for the Colts that seems to be coming into full stride at the right time. We’ll see if Indy can keep things rolling in a gritty matchup with the 6-6 Bengals on Sunday.
