Top 5 Storylines to Look Forward to at Colts Training Camp

There is much to look forward to as the Indianapolis Colts take the field at Grand Park to begin training camp.
In this story:

The Indianapolis Colts will be opening up training camp this week with a lot of storylines surrounding the team.

As the Colts undergo a new era of football with head coach Shane Steichen and quarterback Anthony Richardson, this team finally has something to be excited about. Aside from huge potential contract extensions that are looming for Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman Jr., and potentially Grover Stewart, I dive into the five things that I’m looking forward to the most at Colts camp.

5. A Maniac Is On The Loose? Or Is He?

All eyes will be on "The Maniac", Shaquille Leonard, this week to see what kind of shape he’s in coming off of multiple surgeries. Everything that I’ve heard on his front thus far is that he’s looked good working out, but people are refusing to give a definitive answer on if he will be available this week. In my opinion, as long as the Colts haven’t placed him on PUP yet, then there’s reason to be optimistic that he may be ready to go sooner rather than later.

4. Shane and The Gang

We have all done our homework and dug into Steichen’s past to see what he has done as an OC and quarterbacks coach. If you haven’t, he’s ran a lot of different types of offenses, catering each to whoever his quarterback is and to the specific skill set of his players. After watching the Colts last year trot out one of the worst offenses I’ve ever seen, I’m extremely intrigued to see what Steichen and the guys come up with for this team.

3. Colts Searching in the Woods for a Tight End

If there’s any one position the Colts have a logjam at, it's tight end. They have multiple different sizes and styles for the position and it will be interesting to see how they go about deciding who will be the final 3-4 that they keep. It’s a great problem to have, and competitive teams have this type of problem at a bunch of different positions. Jelani Woods, Kylen Granson, Mo Allie-Cox, Will Mallory, Andrew Ogletree and Pharaoh Brown among others all vying for those few spots is going to be a great battle.

2. Losing Isaiah

The Colts have now had some time to deal with the loss of their young starting cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. They haven’t went out and signed anyone (yet) so it seems they are content with a youth movement at the position. The only spot that’s locked up is the slot position which of course will go to the only cornerback on the roster with starting experience, Kenny Moore II

The rest you can literally draw names out of a hat for who will get the nod for the two starting boundary corners. The Colts drafted three cornerbacks with great size for that role in the defense and training camp is the perfect spot for those guys to compete for those positions. Throw in a Dallis Flowers, who saw some snaps last season toward the end of the year, and you have yourself an exciting battle to watch.

1. A Rich Gardner

Number 1, I’m sure, was pretty easy to predict. Not only is it the most important thing in Colts camp, but people around the league are fascinated by the QB battle taking place in Indianapolis. Richardson vs Gardner Minshew will be must see tv for the NFL.

From everything I’ve heard, from a verbal standpoint, Richardson has a good grasp of what’s been installed thus far and coaches can’t wait to see him translate it to the field. Minshew, of course, has experience in this offense so he is ahead of Rich by a mile in that regard. But if Richardson can close that gap and show off his dynamic talent on the field, he may be starting sooner rather than later.
