Colts Lose RB for the Season
The Indianapolis Colts have sustained another blow in the backfield.
NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reported on Thursday that rookie running back Evan Hull will miss the remainder of the season because of a torn meniscus.
The Colts placed Hull on injured reserve following the knee injury he suffered in Week 1. With that move, the Colts signed Jake Funk to the active roster and guard Ike Boettger to the practice squad.
Schultz's report kills the little hope Colts fans had that they would see Hull again before the end of the 2023 season.
Indianapolis drafted Hull at No. 176 overall in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft. As Schultz indicated, Hull impressed the Colts during offseason workouts. Despite the injury, the team is still looking forward to his future with the organization.
In Week 1, Hull had 1 catch for 6 yards. He also had 1 carry for 1 yard. He played 8 offensive snaps on offense.
The Colts have struggled with injuries in the backfield this year. 2021 All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor started the season on the PUP list because of an ankle injury. Furthermore, backup running back Zack Moss was out due to a forearm injury in Week 1.
Fortunately for the Colts, Moss came back and played very well during Week 2. While Indianapolis still doesn't have much backfield depth, at least Moss' return alleviated some concern in the team's running back room.
Deon Jackson and Jake Funk sit behind Moss on the team's backfield depth chart. Funk will likely receive the opportunities that Hull would have gotten if not for his injury.
The Colts will visit the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3.
