Colts Elevate 2 Skilled Players for Week 1
The Indianapolis Colts announced on Saturday that they have elevated running back Jake Funk and wide receiver Juwaan Winfree from the practice squad to their active roster. Both players will dress in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Funk played for the Colts in one game, which was the season finale, last season. The Colts signed him to their practice squad on November 10.
Most of his NFL experience has come with the Los Angeles Rams. Funk appeared in five games for the Rams last season. He also played 10 games in 2021 while winning a Super Bowl ring with Los Angeles.
Funk rushed for 5 yards on 2 carries with the Rams that season. He didn't have any carries last year.
In the season finale with the Colts, Funk played 15 snaps on special teams.
With Funk's elevation, it seems highly unlikely Zack Moss will play on Sunday against the Jaguars. Moss was listed as questionable after the team's final practice for the week.
On Saturday, the Colts downgraded Moss from questionable to doubtful.
Without Moss, Funk, Deon Jackson and Evan Hull will be the team's available running backs.
As for Winfree, he will make his Colts debut in Week 1. His previous NFL regular season experience came with the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers.
Denver drafted Winfree in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft. He played three games as a rookie but only received 14 offensive snaps.
Winfree played a little more in Green Bay, where he lined up for 186 offensive snaps in 12 games from 2020-22. He also played 83 special teams snaps in those 12 contests with the Packers.
In his NFL career, Winfree has posted 9 receptions for 75 yards. His longest catch went for 17 yards in the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings last year.
