Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay informed The Athletic that running back Jonathan Taylor will have surgery on his thumb, which could sideline him for 2-3 weeks.

The Athletic’s James Boyd posted on X: “BREAKING: Jonathan Taylor will undergo thumb surgery tomorrow in LA with the hope that he can return in 2-3 weeks, #Colts owner Jim Irsay tells @TheAthletic.”

Taylor was reported to have a thumb injury in the second half of the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. The Colts would seal that game with a 27-20 victory on two touchdowns from Taylor and 91 rushing yards on 15 attempts, putting the team in the seventh seed of the AFC playoff bracket through 12 weeks.

However, Indy isn’t in trouble, as backup RB Zack Moss dominated in the early portion of 2023 when Taylor was handling contract negotiations and rehabbing his ankle surgery.

Even with the recent resurgence of Taylor, Moss still sits a 10th in the NFL in rushing yards with 672. He’s also averaging a robust 4.8 yards per carry and has five rushing TDs (one receiving) for six total on the year.

Given how well Moss played before, it’s hard to imagine Shane Steichen’s offense missing a beat with a soft schedule to conclude the season. Moss could be in line for 20+ carries right out of the gate in week 13 against the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium.

This injury comes at an inopportune time amid a three-game win streak. But, Moss has shown he can handle the pressure of being the bell-cow running back and will look to leave right where he left off earlier in the year as the Colts look to make it four victories in a row against the Titans.
