NFL Draft: Colts' Best Player Fits On Day 2
The first round of the 2023 NFL Draft is in the books, and the Indianapolis Colts selected Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson.
With the QB selection in the books, the Colts head into Day 2 with multiple possible needs to fill. Luckily for them, numerous quality prospects fell out of Round 1, which gives the Colts solid options at pick 35 or even in a trade back.
The positions of need that we will look at will be offensive line, linebacker, wide receiver, and cornerback.
OFFENSIVE LINE
The Colts' need at right guard looms large here, and luckily for them, there are multiple solid prospects still on the board. The top four available that fit the team all happen to be Senior Bowl participants, one being newly-drafted Colt Anthony Richardson’s college teammate, O’Cyrus Torrence. Adding competition for camp via free agency or the draft to Will Fries should be a top priority for the team. And with the talent remaining at the position, it's definitely a position to watch when the Colts are on the clock in the second round.
- O’Cyrus Torrence, Florida
- Steve Avila, TCU
- Cody Mauch, North Dakota State
- Dawand Jones, Ohio State
LINEBACKER
The WILL linebacker job is up for grabs come training camp for the Colts, and I believe looking for a linebacker with coverage skills would be a solid addition for the Colts during the second round. Two players happen to have that skill set while also warranting a selection in Round 2. My personal favorite being Drew Sanders, whose elite combo of size and athleticism would be a tremendous fit at the WILL spot for the Colts. Day 2 may not be most fan's ideal spot to draft a linebacker, though, and there are multiple Day-3 fits that could also fit.
- Drew Sanders, Arkansas
- Daiyan Henley, Washington State
WIDE RECEIVER
For the majority of the first round, it was looking like the Colts would have many of the top-tier wide receiver prospects available to them when they were picking in the second round, but a late run on receivers now makes the options slimmer than expected. Adding a vertical threat in the slot is an important element to Colts head coach Shane Steichen’s offense and a position I believe the team would be wise to use the draft to fill due to the lack of solid options available in free agency. Whether it comes in Round 2 or even during the third round, I’d say watch out for receiver on Day 2 for the Colts.
- Jalin Hyatt, Tennesee
- Josh Downs, UCLA
- Trey Palmer, Nebraska
- Marvin Mims Jr., Oklahoma
- Tyler Scott, Cincinnati
CORNERBACK
Cornerback, in my opinion, is the thinnest position group on the Colts' roster at the moment, and the options available in Round 2 are vast. This corner class as a whole is very deep with not only solid prospects but prospects that fit the typical mold that Colts general manager Chris Ballard has prioritized for the position. Two of the prospects even happen to be two of my 16 total first-round grades from my personal scouting this cycle in Kelee Ringo and Joey Porter Jr. Check out my full big board HERE. Corner is the position that, from what I’ve heard from my sources inside the Colts' building, I would be beyond shocked if they leave Day 2 without addressing. I also wouldn't rule out the team adding to this position via the draft AND free agency.
- Kelee Ringo, Georgia
- Joey Porter Jr., Penn State
- Cam Smith, South Carolina
- Julius Brents, Kansas State
