Pro Day Journal, Notre Dame: Isaiah Foskey States 1st-Round Case

Isaiah Foskey and his teammates showed NFL personnel what they were made of at Notre Dame's Pro Day Friday. Horseshoe Huddle was on hand and now brings you their notebook.

For the next month and change, the question of who will be the Indianapolis Colts' next quarterback will dominate the team's narrative.

Most believe the answer to that question lies ahead in the 2023 NFL Draft, as C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, Anthony Richardson, and Will Levis can all make a compelling argument to be picked within the first five selections.

But after the Colts select a quarterback, they must address other holes on the roster. Some of those players may come from the school just a few hours north of Indy at the University of Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish held their Pro Day on Friday as some big names worked out in front of NFL Scouts for the final time before draft day.

Horseshoe Huddle's Andrew Moore was in attendance and brings you his thoughts from the day.

– The Colts were represented at the Pro Day by college scouting coordinator Mitch Chester. Indy, once again, did not have a huge contingent of personnel attending a Pro Day. However, this should not come as a surprise as general manager Chris Ballard tends to send only one or two scouts to each school.

– Former Notre Dame and current Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams was on hand to cheer on his former teammates. Williams missed most of the first half of his rookie season with a broken foot. He returned for the second half of the Rams' season as he tried to carve out a role in the running back room.

– The player from Notre Dame connected to the Colts the most is defensive end Isaiah Foskey. At 6'5", 264 pounds, and with 34-inch arms, the all-time leading sacker in Notre Dame history has all of the athletic traits the Colts love in their edge rushers. Foskey ran through bag drills with the defensive lineman, showing off his explosiveness and power.

– In speaking to Foskey after his workout, he detailed what separates him from other pass rushers.

"Just the consistency in getting to the quarterback," Foskey explained. "That's just something I do well and just getting the quarterback down. Especially getting the ball out, but that's the biggest thing. Sacks are just not good enough anymore. You have to get the ball out."

Getting the ball out and forcing turnovers is music to Ballard's ears.

– The other star player for Notre Dame that performed on Friday was tight end Michael Mayer. Many consider Mayer to be the most complete tight end in a very deep draft class. He can line up in-line and block, split out in the slot and do damage over the top, or be a security blanket for a quarterback over the middle. Mayer ran routes and caught passes from quarterback Sam Hartman, a transfer from Wake Forest who will be the starting quarterback for the Fighting Irish next season.

– Mayer confirmed after his workout that he has met with every team throughout the draft process, and it has been a great learning experience. While most teams went over the film with him, Mayer said he explained to teams how he could fit in their offense and what he could do. It is safe to say Mayer will have a positive impact on whatever team selects him next month.

– Safety Brandon Joseph moved very well on Friday. He had a nice 3-cone drill, showing great change of direction. Joseph also showed off his ball-tracking skills as he high-pointed the ball on deep shots. Joseph could see his name called on Day 3 and provide adequate depth at the safety position.

– Center Jarrett Patterson could be a name to watch for the Colts on Day 3 of the draft. While not the best athlete, Patterson is a solid player who is always in the right spot. Chester watched Patterson very intently while going through offensive line drills.

– Linebacker Bo Bauer put on a show at the bench press, racking 225 pounds 30 times. He performed special teams drills as a long snapper, showing his work on special teams. While the Colts are set at long snapper with Luke Rhodes, Indy is always looking to add players who can contribute on special teams.
