Peyton Manning, Omaha Productions Return to Indy with Pat McAfee
It is hard to find someone Indianapolis Colts fans love more than Peyton Manning.
After 14 wonderful years as the Colts' starting quarterback, resulting in countless wins and a victory in Super Bowl XLI, Manning is still beloved by the city and fans to this day. Lucas Oil Stadium stands today because of the success of Manning.
Another beloved former Colt is Pat McAfee, the former punter turned media superstar who still calls Indianapolis his home. Whether watching The Pat McAfee Show daily on ESPN or seeing him at games on Sundays, fans go ballistic for McAfee.
So, when you have a situation where both Manning and McAfee are involved, Colts fans will show up in droves.
That is exactly what Omaha Productions does on the latest episode of Peyton's Places. The second episode of the fourth season of the ESPN+ Original series takes place in Indianapolis as Manning returns to discuss the art of punting with McAfee. The two go through the history of punters and the lost art form of the coffin corner kick, making the title of the episode "Coffin Corner" very fitting.
"My buddy Pat McAfee has been insisting for years there's a killer episode on punting," Manning says to kick off the episode. "Let's find out if he's right."
Omaha Productions was gracious enough to reach out and grant me access to an early screening of the episode featuring these two Colts' legends. After watching the episode, it does not disappoint.
The majority of the episode takes place on the field at Lucas Oil Stadium. Manning and McAfee sit in the "coffin corner" and discuss what a coffin corner punt is, the legendary punters that made it famous, and why it has seemingly disappeared from the NFL. The two eventually take turns to see if they can nail a perfect coffin kick, literally.
As one can expect when dealing with these two, the episode is filled with comedic moments. From McAfee riding in a Colts' coffin to Manning attempting to punt to a cameo of Colts' owner Jim Irsay, there are multiple moments throughout that make you chuckle.
But the episode is also very informative, giving a history lesson on punting that the causal fan would never have known before. The topics discussed include the legend of Ray Guy and his "helium balls," where the Australian style of punting came from, how a punter founded a company making football action figures, and much more.
The duo even dives into how quarterbacks used to double as the team's punter, which prompts a funny response from Irsay as he watches from the sideline.
"What are we doing?" Irsay asks. "Anthony Richardson could be our punter."
Let's not risk it, Mr. Irsay.
The episode is a unique look into what makes punting a crucial part of the game. Although punters can be the bud of the joke at times, the top punters in the NFL are weapons who dictate field position. Pinning an opposing team deep contributes to hidden yardage and points that can win games.
"I told you this would be a killer show, didn't I?" McAfee quips to Manning with a smile.
"Coffin Corner" premieres on October 29th and is a must-watch for Colts fans and football fans alike. As always, you can catch every episode of Peyton's Places on ESPN+.
