Report: Colts to Add New York Giants Assistant to Coaching Staff

New York Giants running backs coach DeAndre Smith is set to join Shane Steichen's staff in Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Colts officially have their head coach, now the next step is filling out the staff around him. A new report came out today about Shane Steichen's first official hire of his coaching tenure with the team.

According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, New York Giants running backs coach DeAndre Smith is heading to Indy to work on Steichen's staff. While his official role is unclear at the moment, it is safe to assume that this will be more of a minor coaching staff hire (and not a hire for the vacant offensive coordinator position).

Smith is a 22 year coaching veteran, although he has spent just one season coaching in the NFL. He coached running backs with the New York Giants this past season, and he helped the team rank fourth in total rushing yards and fifth in yards per carry in 2022. Prior to that, Smith has spent time at numerous colleges.

Here is the big list of destinations in his 22 year coaching career at the college ranks:

1999-2000 Indiana State Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach

2001-2004 Northern Illinois University Running Backs/Assistant Special Teams

2005-07 Miami University (Ohio) assistant head coach/running backs

2008 University of New Mexico running backs

2009 University of Nevada, Las Vegas running backs

2010-11 University of Illinois running backs

2012 University of New Mexico running backs

2013-15 Syracuse University running backs

2016 Purdue University running backs

2017 University of North Carolina running backs

2018 Utah State University running backs

2019-21 Texas Tech University running backs

Smith has spent multiple seasons of his coaching career in the Indiana area, as he coached with Indiana State from 1999-2000 and with Purdue in 2016. He also overlapped with Shane Steichen back in 2009, when Steichen was a coaching assistant with UNLV.

This may not be a notable hire for the team, but it is the first of many staffing changes expected to come in the following days. Look for the Colts to work quickly as they assemble a full coaching staff under Steichen. There is much work to be done on West 56th Street.
