When is a Deal Expected Between Shane Steichen and the Colts?

The Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator is close to becoming the next head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

As everyone was getting ready to head off to their Super Bowl parties yesterday, major Indianapolis Colts news broke on Twitter.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Colts were targeting Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as their next head coach. The Colts spent early Sunday morning informing the remaining finalists that they were no longer being considered for the job.

However, Steichen was a little busy yesterday as the Eagles took on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII. While the Chiefs got the victory, 38-35, Steichen and the Eagles' offense put on a show. The Eagles put up 417 yards of total offense and four touchdowns on the Chiefs' defense.

No official word has come from the Colts, as they were not permitted to speak with Steichen until after the Super Bowl. Word leaked as the Colts were informing the remaining candidates so they and their teams could continue planning for the offseason. Steichen has also not yet signed a contract to join the Colts.

So, now that the season is over, when can we expect a deal between Steichen and the Colts to happen? It could be as soon as today.

Schefter reported this morning that Steichen is expected to fly to Indianapolis today to finalize his deal with the team and become the Colts' next head coach.

Sources say Colts owner Jim Irsay has sent his private jet to pick up Steichen and bring him to Indianapolis. When Steichen lands, he will meet with Irsay and general manager Chris Ballard, where they will finalize the deal and make Steichen the 11th different head coach for the Colts since the franchise moved to Indy in 1984.

After five long weeks, the Colts head coaching search is expected to come to an end today. The Colts were very thorough in their head coaching search, interviewing 13 candidates, with the second round lasting up to 12 hours for some. The goal was to ensure everyone had a fair shot, doing everything they could to find the best head coach for the franchise.

As Colts fans know all too well, nothing is a done deal until the ink has dried on the contract. However, this does not seem like a Josh McDaniels situation. Steichen will be the next head coach of the Colts.

In the most important offseason in 25 years for the Colts, one of their biggest decisions has finally been made. Now the offseason can officially begin.
