Shane Steichen's Early Ranking from CBS Sports
The Indianapolis Colts hired Shane Steichen away from the Philadelphia Eagles after the season to be their new head coach.
Steichen built a resume of having success with a variety of quarterbacks including Jalen Hurts with the Eagles.
The Colts are counting on him to do the same with rookie Anthony Richardson, and CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin thinks he's the right man for the job.
Benjamin gives the nod to Steichen over Demeco Ryans of the Houston Texans and Jonathan Gannon of the Arizona Cardinals. Ryans and Gannon join Steichen as first year head coaches.
Steichen comes in ranked No. 24 on the CBS Sports head coach rankings.
He's got a potentially tall task on his hands, satisfying owner Jim Irsay while turning raw rookie QB Anthony Richardson into a comfortable NFL passer, and yet Steichen was calm, collected and strategically adaptable shepherding both Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts in Los Angeles and Philadelphia, respectively. -- Cody Benjamin, CBS Sports
Taking a look around the AFC South, the division may be in transition, but there is some good coaching to be found. Outside of newcomers Steichen and Ryans, Doug Pedersen of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Mike Vrabel of the Tennessee Titans come in No. 10 and No. 13 respectively.
Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs heads the list while Matt Eberflus of the Chicago Bears brings up the rear.
Ranking head coaches before they've coached a game in the NFL is a fool's errand, but it's interesting to see the Steichen getting the nod as the best first-year head coach.
Steichen's ranking as a head coach will mirror the team's success this season, and the Colts are hoping both will be on the rise by season's end.
