Will Antonio Gibson ‘Showcase’ with New Commanders Coach Eric Bieniemy?

“Every year we talk about it, but it hasn’t happened. Hopefully, this year, it comes around to where I get to showcase on multiple occasions what I can do out there.” - Antonio Gibson on Eric Bieniemy’s new Commanders offense

Will Antonio Gibson be “showcased” now that the Washington Commanders have hired new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy?

Thats Gibson’s plan. It it mirrored by the Commanders new top assistant?

“I haven’t shown my (full skill set),” Gibson said in an interview with the team website as the Commanders prep for training camp. “Every year we talk about it, but it hasn’t happened. Hopefully, this year, it comes around to where I get to showcase on multiple occasions what I can do out there.”

Coming over from the Kansas City Chiefs, Bieniemy is obviously installing offensive changes. Gibson - who came to the NFL with high-level credentials as a pass-catcher - has often been the top back.

But other things have changed here as well. Washington last year drafted Brian Robinson Jr. and he’s penciled in as the starter. And this year Chris Rodriguez was drafted as well.

While Gibson seems to be suggesting that he has never been given the chance to fully spread his wings - and while that might be true - we’re not sure Bieniemy is going to hand him some sort of three-down-back baton.

Indeed, not only do the Commanders also employ other viable backs - Bieniemy is also installing his offense - that is to say, the Chiefs offense.

And famously, the Super Bowl Chiefs are one of the teams that have pushed the idea of “the devaluation of the running back” by using multiple plug-in pieces at that spot behind QB Patrick Mahomes.

Gibson is surely aware of all of this. Nevertheless, he sounds excited about the overall positivity coming with head coach Ron Rivera’s key hire.

“The level of discipline, and what we need to be doing and how we need to do it, it shows right now,” Gibson said. “By the time we get to the season, we’re gonna be ready for anything.”
