BREAKING: Cardinals Cut Colt McCoy; Who Starts vs. Commanders Week 1?
The Washington Commanders are no longer set to face a former quarterback of theirs in Week 1.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Cardinals have cut Colt McCoy, who played for Washington from 2014-19. This is paving the way for Josh Dobbs, who Arizona traded for last week, to become the Week 1 starter against the Commanders.
Dobbs, 28, played the 2022 season with the Browns and was coached by Drew Petzing, who joined new head coach Jonathan Gannon's staff this offseason as the offensive coordinator. He was cut in November and eventually landed with the Tennessee Titans, starting the team's last two games of the season.
In those starts, Dobbs completed 58.8 percent of his passes for 411 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Cardinals have a tricky quarterback situation with Kyler Murray still sidelined after tearing his ACL late last season. The team currently rosters former Washington quarterback Colt McCoy and fifth-round rookie Clayton Tune from the University of Houston. Now, Dobbs has a chance to compete for the starting job in a crowded quarterback room.
Given the fact that Dobbs was traded for a mid-round pick, there's a chance that the Cardinals have serious interest in having him start for the team.
The Cardinals visit the Commanders for the season opener on Sept. 10 at FedEx Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
