'Beers On Josh Harris!' New Commanders Owner Pays for 1,000 Drinks

"I want to get to Washington, my hometown, and celebrate with you guys. "Let’s get started by me buying everyone ... a beer. Can we do that?” - New Commanders owner Josh Harris.

It's a funny thing what a freebie can do. A free T-shirt. A free ball cap. Oh, and especially a free beer, which can come in awfully handy when you are a Washington Commanders fan who is both lamenting the failures of the last quarter-century while trying to toast a brighter future.

Enter new owner Josh Harris, who rewarded Washington football fans at the end of the week with a bunch of free beer - apparently about 1,000 free beers - to celebrate his purchase of the franchise from the disgraced Dan Snyder.

Harris was already the point man on having spent $6.05 billion to purchase the Commanders, but fortunately he had enough pocket change left over to buy a round.

He celebrated the deal in part by calling into the “Grant and Danny” radio show in Washington, D.C., to make the announcement that he would be purchasing beers for about 1,000 fans who were in attendance at the “Burgundy and Sold” on party Thursday night.

“Let’s go!” Harris said, as transcribed by Awful Announcing. “I’m just leaving the league meeting, and I knew there was a party and a bunch of Washington fans there. I’m super-pumped. It’s a great day for Washington football and I’m ready to get to work. I’m heading your way. I want to get to Washington, my hometown, and celebrate with you guys.

"Let’s get started by me buying everyone in the brewery and The Bullpen a beer. Can we do that?”

Yessir. We can do that. ... and we can also laugh along as Harris added that he was "gonna have to dip into my savings, but I want everyone to have a beer. Let’s do it.”

NFL owners voted unanimously Thursday to award the Harris group the rights to own and operate the Commanders’ franchise, which had been owned by Snyder since 1999. Harris knows his way around this territory as he is also an owner of the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA and the New Jersey Devils of the NHL. But this one is special to him. Why?

“As a lifelong Washington football fan who grew up here, I know that the Commanders are more than just a sports team,” Harris said in a statement. “This is an institution, passed down from generation to generation. ...''

And on this day, there was beer ... passed down from the new owner to his surely-appreciative fans.
