Belichick Hiring? Commanders 'Hope to Meet' With Patriots Legendary Coach
Bill Belichick's chair is still warm in New England. But working on the assumption he is about to part ways with the Patriots next week on "Black Monday" or thereabouts?
The Washington Commanders want in.
Per Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Commanders (along with the Las Vegas Raiders) are hoping to meet with Belichick - assuming he become available.
The Raiders are already offering up a vacancy to be filled by a new full-time head coach after firing Josh McDaniels, though there is obvious locker room support there for interim boss Antonio Pierce.
But in Washington? The 4-12 Commanders have yet to make their move regarding the incumbent Ron Rivera. It is expected, however, that after Rivera coaches on Sunday against the hated Dallas Cowboys that new owner Josh Harris will put into place a plan to rejuvenate the long-moribund Washington franchise.
Is Belichick, 71, the man to do that?
The Patriots legend has an incredible resume, of course, featuring an astounding six Super Bowl titles. But he has been the overseer of a mediocre program for four post-Tom Brady years, and this season, the Pats might be the NFL's worst team.
Rivera Has a Lot at Stake vs. Cowboys
An early-week meeting between owner Robert Kraft and Belichick is coming. ... just as a Monday meeting between Harris and Rivera is surely on the agenda.
And then? Belichick media sycophants are insisting there will be a "bidding war" for his services, with the Chargers and others involved. And that may be so. But first? Harris would apparently like to meet with Belichick ... and to think about both all of those Super Bowls but also the fact that the coach hasn't won a playoff game since 2018.
