Bill Belichick to Washington Commanders? New England Patriots Insider Speculates on Move

The Washington Commanders could be the next destination for New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick if he were to be fired.
In this story:

Bill Belichick is arguably the best coach in NFL history, but his New England Patriots are off to a 1-5 start this season without much direction trending the right way.

This means Belichick could be on his way out after 24 seasons at the helm in Foxboro ... and maybe he'll look towards the Washington Commanders as his next stop, should he decide to coach elsewhere.

Mike Giardi, a Patriots insider for 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston, speculates on whether the Commanders could be a possible destination for Belichick should he and the Pats divorce.

"Bill Belichick still wants to coach," Giardi said. "So I know there’s been like this debate on, you know, Chris Simms put out like 'I don’t think he’s that you know I honestly I think if it’s going to go bad, I want it to look like I wasn’t planning on coaching anymore.' Yeah. I think I don’t think he’ll want to go out this way. I think you’ll want to coach. Like I said, I don’t think I don’t think you’d get much for him in a trade. But there are teams. Sure. I think the Commanders would be a team."

Hiring Belichick would mean firing or moving on from Ron Rivera, who is currently in his fourth season with the Commanders and has accrued a sub-.500 record.

Rivera is under contract through the 2024 season, but with new owner Josh Harris potentially looking to make his own stamp on the organization, perhaps making a change to get arguably the best coach in NFL history would suffice.
