Commanders LOOK: Carson Wentz Training in Washington Jersey, Eagles Helmet
NFL training camp is well under way and former Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz remains a free agent.
As Wentz waits for an opportunity, he shared an Instagram post Sunday that was seemingly meant to be self-deprecating. Instead, though, it felt a little sad, a reminder of how far the former No. 2 overall pick has fallen.
The post read "Back in the lab ... just looks a little different so far this year 🙃 #alternateuniforms #trainingcamp2023" with Wentz wearing his old Philadelphia Eagles helmet, a Commanders practice jersey and Indianapolis Colts shorts.
Wentz was traded by the Colts to the Commanders in early 2022 and spent the season as Washington's primary starter.
He suffered a finger injury in Week 6 and was ultimately benched after his replacement, Taylor Heinicke, out-performed him and began leading the Commanders to victory.
Heinicke began to struggle in December, which prompted coach Ron Rivera to have Wentz return to the starting lineup. It was a decision that ultimately didn't work out for the Commanders, causing them to miss the playoffs and cut Wentz shortly after the season.
While it hasn't entirely been a quiet offseason for Wentz -- there's been buzz about his willingness to be a backup and the work he's doing with former Super Bowl winning coach Jon Gruden -- there haven't been any reports linking him to a specific team. It's not clear if the 30-year-old will get an opportunity to be part of a team in 2023.
