Chicago Bears at Washington Commanders: Coach Matt Eberflus to Get Fired After 'Thursday Night Football'?
The Washington Commanders are 2-2, and everything being relative, that is a disappointment of a sort. But - again, because everything is relative - at least they're not the Chicago Bears, who show up at FedEx Field in Week 5 for "Thursday Night Football" maybe on the verge of seeing their head coach get fired.
"You can not lose 14 games in a row and think you should hold onto your job," veteran NFL reporter Peter King said this week during an appearance on 670 The Score. "So I would not be surprised, if it's a bad loss on Thursday, and the Bears make a change. It just wouldn't be surprising."
We see King's point. Chicago is 0-4 a month into the season, with their high point coming in Week 4 in a 31-28 loss to the Denver Broncos in which the Bears blew a 21-point lead.
But for Bears head coach Matt Eberflus, there is an even bigger number that looms large than the 0-5 mark Chicago would have if it suffers a bad loss to the Commanders on Thursday night.
The Bears have endured 14 straight losses under Eberflus, the former Dallas Cowboys defensive coach. Yes, 15 consecutive losses makes this tough to stomach for Chicago. And there seem to be locker-room dissension issues from young QB Justin Fields on down ... all reasons for a potential firing.
Again, the Commanders have their own issues. New ownership under Josh Harris has injected optimism into the program. But the Week 4 34-31 overtime loss to the division-rival Eagles is an opportunity lost ... with the good news being that if the Commanders can score 31 points against a stout Philadelphia defense, the Bears - who allow just over 34 points per game - ought to be ripe for the picking ...
And maybe, to Bears management, then ripe for the firing.
