Commanders 'Kept Money That Wasn't Theirs': Maryland AG Announces Ticket-Holder Settlement

“For years, the Commanders kept money that was not theirs. It belongs to their customers. Our settlement will require the team to return this money to those customers.'' - Maryland AG on settlement with team.

The Washington Commanders have reached a settlement with the Maryland Attorney General’s office after the team stood accused of failing to return ticket deposits to season ticket holders.

The Maryland attorney general, Brian Frosh, posted to Twitter on Friday to confirm the settlement news ... while also taking a slap at the front-office practices of the franchise under the leadership of embattled owner Daniel Snyder.

“For years, the Commanders kept money that was not theirs,” Frosh wrote. “It belongs to their customers. Our settlement will require the team to return this money to those customers, pay a penalty and make sure they don’t engage in this conduct again.”

The Maryland AG office alleges that the team did not return the deposits within the required 30 days to eligible ticket-holders, Frosh noting that the franchise's conduct is in violation of the Consumer Protection Act.

As for the fine, the team agreed to pay a $250,000 penalty for its conduct.

This issue is of course only the latest in a series of controversies involving the franchise under Snyder, who continues to face investigations from both the NFL and a congressional committee regarding sexual misconduct in the workplace, among other allegations. Members of the football team have started to openly address the "dark cloud'' that exists within the Commanders, vowing to overcome that. The team is now 5-5, having won four of its last five games with a visit to the lowly Houston Texans scheduled for Sunday.

Snyder has launched a financial exploration into selling the franchise, which could be worth $7 billion, according to some estimates.
