The Washington Commanders are in the process of picking their next head coach, and it could very well be Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Johnson, 37, was one of the top candidates in last year's coaching carousel that didn't land a job, but he responded with the Lions' best season in decades and the first playoff win for the franchise in 32 years. Now, Johnson is preparing for the NFC Divisional Round against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he also has some thoughts over his future.

Johnson was asked about new Commanders general manager Adam Peters in a press conference Thursday, where he sung his praises.

"I've heard nothing but fantastic things about people that have worked with him directly or have met him over the course of scouting on the road," Johnson said via Washington Post reporter Nicki Jhabvala. "[I] look forward to meet him and talking with him."

Peters and Johnson don't have an immediate connection from their NFL careers, but it's clear that there is a mutual respect there from each party.

4 Coaching Candidates for Commanders to Pair With Young QB

The only main candidate Peters is connected to is Bobby Slowik, who coached for the San Francisco 49ers and followed DeMeco Ryans to the Houston Texans when he was hired there last year.

Between Johnson and Slowik, they are the two top candidates that haven't had a shot as a head coach yet. Both have flexed their offensive genius in their current gigs and Washington could very well bring one of them to the nation's capital.
