Commanders' Emmanuel Forbes: Defensive Rookie of the Year?

Washington Commanders cornerback Emmanuel Forbes is among those likely to win Defensive Rookie of the Year.
In this story:

The Washington Commanders are taking the field in Ashburn, Virginia for training camp with an exciting roster and a very healthy attitude after an offseason of changes, highlighted by a new ownership group led by billionaire Josh Harris.

Coach Ron Rivera looks to lead the Commanders back to the playoffs with key additions, including first-round pick Emmanuel Forbes and second-round pick Quan Martin.

Both enter training camp with high expectations ... But Forbes is drawing comparisons to Dallas Cowboys star Trevon Diggs, who led the league in 2021 with 11 interceptions.

Forbes' instinctual coverage is one reason why NFL.com ranked him as the No. 5 candidate for 2023 defensive rookie of the year.

"Forbes is very thin, which could hurt him in run support, but his rare blend of top-end speed, instincts and ball skills give him the opportunity to make his mark early on," NFL.com writes. "When healthy, the Commanders’ front can be menacing as a rush unit, which should only amplify Forbes’ playmaking talents."

At Mississippi State, Forbes totaled 14 interceptions, including an FBS-record six returned for touchdowns. Last season, Sauce Gardner won 2022 Defensive Rookie of the Year. Could another cornerback win it this season?

The Commanders defense was one of the best in the NFL last season and helped willed Washington to a 8-8-1 record despite having a revolving door at quarterback. Jack Del Rio's defense is only expected to improve with a healthy Chase Young on the edge ... and hopefully an early impact from Forbes.
