Commanders ‘Quiet’ Signing of RB Kareem Hunt Coming?

What will the Commanders decide on Kareem Hunt as they conduct a “preliminary inquiry” that is apparently underway?

The Washington Commanders running back room seems rather full. But the connection between new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and Kareem Hunt is at least leading to some brainstorming inside team HQ.

Between Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson, Washington seems loaded up at running back. But colleague Josina Anderson nevertheless notes that as a possible candidate is a “quiet” and “behind-the-scenes” Washington consideration.

Anderson smartly also calls this “preliminary”; we have NFL scouts who don’t think Hunt - who had Bieniemy as his position coach with the Chiefs when he was putting up big numbers - is out of gas.

From Anderson: I’m told the Commanders have quietly been making some preliminary inquiries behind-the-scenes on free agent Kareem Hunt, per league source. … We’ll see if this leads to an opportunity for Hunt with Washington.”

Hunt, 27, has been with the Cleveland Browns for the last four seasons and mostly played behind Nick Chubb. Now the Browns have decided to not bring back Hunt. … and so he sits on a very low free agency shelf.

The new coordinator, though he certainly does have great authority working under head coach Ron Rivera, obviously won’t push for Hunt and a Chiefs buddies reunion if the Commanders organization decides he cannot be a true contributor in Washington. But the only way to know that about Kareem Hunt is to at least conduct the sort of “preliminary inquiry” that is apparently underway in the coaching wing and the front office.
