Gruden Rips 'Asinine' Dan Snyder: Owner Ran Commanders Draft?!

Scandal? Sexual misdeeds? Financial scams? Foolishness and failure from top to bottom? Between allegations and facts, yes, yes and more yes. But Washington owner Dan Snyder even ran his own NFL Drafts?
In this story:

We know about the drafting of Dwayne Haskins and how that was a decision driven almost solely by the now-gone team owner Dan Snyder. But it seems Snyder's disastrous run as owner of the Washington Commanders - has finally come to a close after the sale to Josh Harris was unanimously approved on Thursday - goes deeper than that.

Scandal? Sexual misdeeds? Financial scams? Foolishness and failure from top to bottom? Between allegations and facts, yes, yes and more yes. But even with the book shutting on his time as Washington's owner, the drafting of the late Haskins was a one-time thing with Snyder in charge ... right?

"He didn’t put in the work," former coach Jay Gruden said, insisting that Snyder's involvement was much deeper than that. "For him to pick a player in the draft is asinine. He didn’t put the work in. He didn’t watch the players. He didn’t go to the meetings. He didn’t go to the scouts’ meetings.”

Former Commanders coach Gruden spoke out about his time in Washington on The Kevin Sheehan Show Podcast. Among the things Gruden said included that Snyder made personnel decisions in the draft and free agency despite not being involved in the process or evaluating players.

Gruden was Washington's head coach from 2014 to 2019. In that span, the Commanders went 35-49-1 and made one playoff appearance in 2015. Gruden was fired after an 0-5 start in 2019.

After spending six seasons with Snyder, Gruden thinks Washington will be better off with Harris at the helm. We will work on the assumption for now - knowing how Harris oversees the NBA's Sixers and the NHL's Devils without pretending he's a basketball and hockey personnel director - that the front office style is about to change. In the meantime, the Snyder thing lingers in a bothersome way ...

"I don’t respect the guy that doesn’t watch the film and comes in, makes the pick, and tells you who he is signing in free agency," Gruden said. "It makes no sense when we and the scouts are doing all of the film work, and all of a sudden, he comes in and makes the pick. So, I think it is going to be a very beneficial move for all of the fans and for the organization moving forward.”
