Would Hiring Bill Belichick Give Commanders Owner Josh Harris His 'Quick Turnaround'?
The Washington Commanders are in the midst of change aplenty. Ron Rivera has already been told his services are no longer required as the new ownership group, led by Josh Harris looks to make sweeping changes in a bid to get the Commanders back to where they think they belong.
And now Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are divorcing as of Thursday.
In Washington, the process of turning around a franchise is rarely something that happens overnight - indeed, here, it rarely happens at all in recent decades. It can take time.
But does Harris want that quick turnaround? And ... we wonder if Belichick, at 71 being connected by national media people to this job (frankly, as opposed to boots-on-the-ground media in DC) is that turnaround guy.
“Listen, this was not a fun season for the ownership group," Harris said. "We're right there with the fans in terms of sweating every loss.
"Obviously if we could write the script, it would be a quick turnaround, but on the other hand, you have to make long-term decisions and do things in a very, one person at a time, one athlete at a time way.
"So sometimes they take longer, right? So, I think my view is that we want it to be as quick as we can, but the ultimate goal is to be an elite team that's competing for championships. And so, I find that when you do things quickly, sometimes you set yourself back.
"I want a winning franchise quickly, but on the other hand, for me it's about making the right decisions.”
So Harris wants a quick, yet thorough process to find the Commanders' next head coach and other positions he feels need to be changed. And then he wants to hurry up and win.
With Washington holding the No. 2 pick in the upcoming draft, getting the head coach, general manager and others all signed, sealed, and delivered as "quickly" as possible is ideal as it is a huge undertaking to decide what to do with such a coveted pick.
Times are changing in the nation's capital and for the better as Harris and his partners are desperate to get this organization out of the mud and into a position where they are playing good enough football to where playoffs are expected each season.
But to get the franchise to that place, it will take time, and if Harris wants that "quick turnaround" then he will need to get cracking, but he will do it smartly.
