Chiefs Win Super Bowl; Best Champs Ever vs. Washington?
The Washington Commanders have now been joined by all of the other 31 NFL franchises in the offseason as the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers take steps toward trying to secure another trip to the Super Bowl in 2024.
Whenever the Commanders make a trip to the Super Bowl it won't be the first time the franchise has been at the top of the league, and fans of the team can't wait to see if coach Dan Quinn can come over from the Dallas Cowboys to do what they couldn't with the NFC East Division rival.
Of course, Washington is no stranger to the big game, and as ESPN took on the task of ranking all 58 winners of the Super Bowl the franchise held up as the best the league has ever seen.
"Here's the team that DVOA says is the greatest of all time," ESPN says of the 1991 championship team. "Washington led the NFL in points scored and was second in points allowed...For the 1991 season, Washington was second in offensive DVOA behind San Francisco, third on defense behind Philadelphia and New Orleans and first on special teams. But what's more impressive is where Washington ranks in DVOA out of 1,309 teams going all the way back to 1981. It's the only team to rank in the top 50 for all three phases. (Specifically, Washington is 50th in offense, 36th in defense and 19th in special teams.)"
During the 1991 NFL season coach Joe Gibbs led a squad that blanked their opponents in three contests outscoring the Lions, Cardinals, and Eagles by a combined score of 102-0.
Why Commanders Coach Dan Quinn is 'Exactly What's Needed' in Washington
Winning Super Bowl XXVI against the Buffalo Bills put the cherry on top of the best season the NFL has ever seen out of a championship team.
Washington has two other championship teams in the history of the big game and the the 1982 squad came in No. 44 in the rankings while 1987's team ranks 55th.
